"The Tribe" at Sheila Wyne's weekly BBQ.
Whenever the weather is reasonable, my artist friend Sheila Wyne has a weekly Sunday BBQ, and we all spend hours chatting around her large fire pit. I thought this was an interesting shot, following the embers into the night sky. It was cold and snowing. That's Sheila in the scene.

Above..."The Tribe", around the fire pit.
The "lantern" shown in the foreground below, was made from ice! Sheila emptied the frozen contents of a large trash can, which had water and leaves in it, turning it upside down. She then punched a hole in the top, and placed a couple of large candles inside. It worked great, and burned all night.

Be careful!
I shot this photo out my front window, in June of 2008. I'm showing you this photo just to illustrate how careful you should be when roaming around Alaska in early morning fog. This is a mother moose and her two babies… beautiful, but not something you want to run into by accident.

Moose in my yard
In the spring of 2005, I was across the street from where I live, visiting with my artist friend Sheila Wyne, while she assembled a large art piece for a local museum. As we were chatting, this moose came and hung out with us for a while, then trotted away. You just never know what will wonder into the neighborhood.
A local flight, from Anchorage to Homer, and back. (2003)
I took a flight with a friend in his Bonanza, from Anchorage, to Homer, and back, with another friend trailing us in a Cessna 182. This was in March, when, although it was still snowing at times, most of the heavy winter covering had melted.

It's always winter, somewhere in Alaska.
I took a flight from Anchorage to Chicago, in August of 2002. Although it was 75 degrees in Anchorage, you can see here that once you get back into the mountains a bit, and increase your elevation, it's quite a different story.

John Rickert - "Mountain Man"

The view from a John's small plane, flying into the Iditarod.

Watch where you walk, in Alaska!

One of the original Alaska mountain men, with John.

The worse the weather, the more John is out in it.

Nature is a little different here…

The beauty of Alaska
I came here in December of 1994 for the first time, and intended to only stay for a couple of weeks. What I saw during that time changed my mind, and I've been here since then. This brief slideshow will give you an idea of what this state is like, and why it's hard for me to leave.
