Coming soon… 2012 photos and video

In June, 2011, I moved to Ohio for six months, to spend some time with my mom. Before leaving Alaaka, I took advantage of my last winter and spring there, and put together a slide show of the experience. Click here to see it. (about 49 MB QuickTime) In December of 2011, I returned to Alaska, and will continue with some winter adventures. Stay tuned!

11-09-10 Road Trip

If you're driving into or out of Anchorage, there's only one highway to take, going either north or south. (The Seward Highway) Over the years, it's continued to be a reliable source for viewing some incredible terrain, and is the way you gain access to many of the known trailheads. This particular day, we drove south from Anchorage about 40 miles, stopping along the way, and just enjoyed getting out of town for a few hours.

Yours truly, at Turnagin Arm (near Ted Stevens International Airport)

About 40 miles south of Anchorage. Low clouds everywhere.

If you're hiking across these ridges, you sometimes have to just sit and wait for the mist to clear, to get your bearings.

Having a look acrosss Turnagin arm toward Denali. (250 miles away!)

Looking north, across Turnagin Arm

Looking west, toward Susitna, the peak often appears to be floating above the water.

11-02-10 Day Hike

This image is at Bootlegger's Cove, on the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. On this day, the cove was nearly frozen, and you can see a group of otter tracks on the bank. The otters are in the water most of the day. Gorgeous!

02-25-10 Snow Time Lapse

This time lapse video was shot from my home window, and covers about two hours of a heavy snowfall. Time to get out the shovel.

The photo below was shot on 01-01-10. giving you an idea of what it would be like to tromp through the area after a combination of heavy snow and ice. This is the woodland area that begins about 30 feet from my back door.
